Interiorem Solutions are delighted to have transformed a former office floor at Peterborough Hospital into two 36 bed wards, creating additional capacity for 72 inpatients.
We were initially approached by our client to assist with the delivery of this critical scheme as the originally appointed contractor was unable to proceed just prior to commencement. Due to our longstanding relationship, we were able to act quickly and take on the project at short notice.
“From start to finish, Interiorem have been fantastic at Peterborough Hospital. Their cooperation and expertise, combined with their focus on practical solutions was vital to the success of this project. The project has not been easy with all the daily site activities, coordination problems, and design clashes but your expertise has allowed us to overcome them to complete the project quickly and efficiently.” – Marcello Marcelini, Construction Lead at Multiplex
Due to our late appointment alongside the services contractor, our client was struggling to ensure that a coordinated design was available, so our dedicated team supported with the final stages of design and procurement. We helped by organising design workshops with the relevant consultants, including the services contractor, to collate scope documentation that allowed packages to be sent out to our subcontractors.
One of the key technical challenges was managing interface detailing. The building was originally designed as an office space which meant we had to work around some of the original structures. For example, in some of the new bathroom areas, existing structural columns had to be carefully designed around. Our team developed bespoke solutions to integrate these elements into the new layout without compromising functionality or aesthetics.
Due to the short notice, lead times for procuring materials were extremely tight. However, with the support of our strong supplier network, we were able to source and deliver all required materials in time to meet programme demands.
All materials and equipment needed to be transported to the fourth floor via an external hoist. This added another layer of logistical complexity.
Hospitals are highly sensitive environments and even though our works were confined to an unoccupied floor, we had to remain mindful of the impact on hospital staff and patients throughout the building. Therefore, the need to maintain air cleanliness was critical, meaning that the number of trades working in the space at any one time had to be tightly controlled. Coordinating multiple trades within a live hospital setting, especially during final finishes, required detailed planning and constant communication.
“Delivering this project on a tight timeline and at such short notice required teamwork and commitment from everyone involved. It’s been a pleasure to work alongside the client and their teams to create spaces that will make a real difference to the community. Seeing the wards complete and ready to welcome patients is something we’re all very proud of.” – Jamie Valente, Managing Director at Interiorem Solutions
Our team worked collaboratively with our client to overcome service and design challenges and to ensure the successful completion of a high-quality, functional space that will enable the hospital to welcome and care for more patients. This project is a strong testament to our capability in delivering complex fit-out works in live healthcare environments.
