PROJECT OVERVIEW

Multiplex, one of the UK’s leading main contractors, set out to create a Centre of Excellence in London, a purpose-built training facility inspired by their flagship centre in Sydney, Australia. The vision was to establish a dedicated space where Multiplex staff, suppliers, and project partners could be trained, developed, and connected, bringing together a purpose-built training environment, breakout space, modern offices, and supporting facilities under one roof.

The challenge was not starting from scratch. The space in question was an existing warehouse facility — functional but unsuited to its new purpose. Interiorem Solutions was brought in to transform it.

Our scope covered the full project lifecycle: from structural assessment and redesign through to the complete interior fit-out of the training room, office space, staircase, WCs, breakout areas, and five bespoke kitchen installations. All delivered in alignment with the Multiplex brand and to exacting quality standards.

THE CHALLENGE

From the outset, the project presented a structural complexity that required careful resolution before construction could begin.

The original design specified a steel frame structure. However, without intrusive survey work to the existing slab, we could not justify the point loadings that a traditional steel frame structure would demand. This finding, identified early through Interiorem’s thorough preconstruction assessment, triggered a fundamental redesign.

Working collaboratively with the structural engineer and satisfying the conditions set by the building’s landlord, a critical stakeholder given that Multiplex were leasing the property, the team developed an alternative solution using a lightweight SFS structure. This approach achieved the necessary structural performance whilst respecting the constraints of the existing building fabric.

OUR APPROACH

With the structural design resolved and approved, Interiorem commenced on site at the start of January 2026. The project was completed by the end of March — a fast-paced delivery made possible entirely by the groundwork laid in the months before.

The fit-out scope was comprehensive. It included:

-The training room
-A full office refurbishment
-Five kitchen installations across the facility
-A new staircase connecting the facilities
-WC facilities
-A breakout space

Throughout, Interiorem worked closely with Multiplex to ensure every element aligned with their brand identity. The palette, black doors, white walls, anthracite-toned tiling, and lighter oak joinery, was not decorative. It was intentional. The Centre of Excellence needed to feel unmistakably Multiplex: confident, modern, and built to last.

THE RESULT

The Multiplex Centre of Excellence was delivered on programme, to specification, and to a quality standard that reflected both Interiorem’s workmanship and the Multiplex brand.

The space now functions exactly as intended: A professional, fully equipped training hub where Multiplex can develop their people and engage their supply chain. The exhibition space, training room, offices, and breakout areas work together as a coherent, high-quality environment.

For Interiorem, the project was a demonstration of what genuinely collaborative working looks like in practice. Subcontractors and suppliers engaged fully. The client relationship was constructive and communicative throughout. And the finished result spoke for itself.

“The project turned out fantastically. I’m most proud of the relationship with Multiplex and how we worked together to deliver this project to the standard it deserved.

The subcontractors and suppliers that were involved really put in the effort — we ended up with a joint goal. It was quite simply an enjoyable job to build.”
